MERCADO | CIUDAD DE PANAMÁ
2017 - 7,250 M²
The building is projected on a 4.500m2 site, in the Coco del Mar neighborhood in Panama City, in a residential commercial context.
The idea was to promote a new place for meeting and cultural exchange in a city eager for these situations, and to offer the commercialization of a variety of different local basic products such as butchers, fishmongers, flower sales, bakery, sweets, greengrocers, craft beers, etc.
We developed the market on the ground floor and a high floor. Everything happens under a large metallic roof with orthogonal folds in two directions, which collect the rainwater which is reused for the new water system of the market. The premises close the periphery of the plot with hard faces to the outside in reinforced concrete, diluting the noise and leaving crates for each supplier to the interior of the large covered space. We wanted in its interior to establish a somewhat disorganized dynamic, which will rescue the natural concept of the old market, where people, not only do the purchases, but they remain and can consume the products in the site that provokes them. On the upper floor, we allocated more private spaces for rent, which was necessary to economy balance of the project, promoting the participation of uses linked to the market such as food workshops and living exhibitions.
